Public Art

Holmes Adams Projects has developed a particular specialisation in acquiring and commissioning art for landscape and for public spaces, and in managing the technical aspects of such projects.

In particular, our expertise centres around the commissioning of new art for specific spaces.  This is often a daunting process, particularly when the pieces in question may be very large, with attendant technical problems. After receiving requests for help with projects of this kind from several clients, we made the decision to bring our joint experience in this field to bear, and have developed a specific tailormade service for clients wishing to commission large-scale work for public and exterior spaces.

The Brief

We will initially work with a client to define the brief for the project.  This will frequently involve collaboration with architects, landscape designers, engineers and planning authorities. It will encompass all aspects of the project, from the client’s aesthetic, philanthropic and commercial goals in mounting the exercise, through to more mundane aspects of budget, timescale, technical and structural requirements, and long-term investment potential.

Selecting an Artist

Working from the brief, we will research a number of potential artists with the aim of producing a short-list of ideal candidates. We will liaise with each one in producing a detailed proposal laying out their vision for the project.

Final selection may rest with one individual, with a committee, or may be open to competition or public vote.  In one of our recent projects the choice of an artist was the result of a voting process open to every employee of a multinational company – whatever the demands of the project, we can handle every aspect of this complex part of the process.

The Project

A contract is drawn up between the client, ourselves and the artist, clearly delineating payment schedules, installation dates and all possible liabilities. We oversee a regular dialogue between artist and client, and where relevant the architects, planners and structural engineers. Progress reports are supplied at agreed intervals, ensuring the project is on time and on budget.

Installation

Over many previous projects, both in the UK and abroad, we have a assembled a team of specialist technicians so that we are equipped to handle every kind of project. We will oversee all aspects of transport, installation and display.
